5th grade students read and used the Notice and Note Signposts to interact with a nonfiction text. After watching the video, you will see the type of discussion that students were having while using the signposts. Students were more engaged and wanted to share their thoughts. This engagement lead students to believe that they were experts on the topic. Purposeful discussion of texts is a a great way to provide access to readings. Students who are more engaged in a discussion about a text have the opportunity to clarify their thinking. The structure of the discussion (like the using questions from the Notice and Note book) helps students to be accountable as an individual and a group.
